South Africa is one of the best places to visit on holiday – our beaches are unbeaten, our weather is incredible, and our cultures are lively and rich. Unfortunately, as with anywhere in the world, our country can also be dangerous at times. But do not fear! With our useful tips handy, you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Whether you’re a local or a visitor from further afield, we’re here to offer peace of mind.
Use the resources available
Cape Town Tourism’s TravelWise platform is a one-stop website for up-to-date safety information, practical tips, and emergency contact numbers. The information is constantly updated, as crime hotspots shift, and areas become less or more dangerous. Have a read through the webpage before your trip and note down any useful information in your phone or on paper.
The Namola App is another incredibly useful resource to have: this free safety response app pinpoints your location upon opening the app and gives you immediate access to an emergency operator, ensuring you get the help you need.
Lastly, the Band-Aid Programme is the place to turn to if you may be in distress during your stay in Cape Town, as they help with replacing lost documents, counselling, finding emergency accommodation, laying a charge at SAPS, and contacting banks in the event of bank card fraud. Their contact number is 021 487 6552 .
Be aware of your surroundings
While out and about, be sure to check your surroundings. Look out for things like: is the location busy or deserted? Are there any suspicious people or vehicles about? Is anyone following you? If you are getting money from an ATM, double check that no one is lurking about and never accept assistance at an ATM. Don’t carry large amounts of cash with you – most places will accept card payments. If you are driving a car, park in a secure and well-lit area, preferably with an official car or security guard.
Listen to the locals
If anyone local tells you to avoid a specific area, whether it be at daytime or night-time, listen to them. Ask our reception staff which areas to avoid. You can also tell reception what your plans are for the day and when, more or less, they can expect you back. This is good practice as it keeps a record of where you are meant to be and lets us know when to sound the alarm that something is wrong.
Keep valuables out of sight
Whether it be jewellery, cell phones, or cameras, keep valuables hidden, out of sight, and secure, and don’t leave your belongings unattended. This rule counts for while exploring the city and in your accommodation. Store your important documents in a safe place.
Save emergency numbers on your phone
Save the contact details for your country’s consulate, in case of any immigration issues. Other handy emergency numbers to save are:
