Affordable Activities To Do In the Area With Your Kids
3 min read
Dolphin Beach Hotel is located in Blouberg, only a 30-minute drive from Cape Town, but this coastal town feels like it’s miles away from the city, with calming beaches and breath-taking views. The area is perfect for any traveller, but especially families with children. We’re here to highlight some of the best affordable activities you and your family can enjoy in the area.
Visit The Beach For Free
Blouberg is known for its gorgeous long stretch of beach and beautiful view of Table Mountain – all for no cost at all! Take yourself and the kids out for a beach day, where you can swim, tan, build sandcastles, eat ice cream, and play in the rock pools during low tide. We even have some great tips that will make your family beach day that much easier. Finish the day off with a walk along the beach and enjoy the stunning sunset over Cape Town. Dolphin Beach Hotel is the only hotel on the Blouberg beach strip that has direct access to the beach, so you can be out of bed and in the sea within two minutes. If you are passionate about the environment and would like to pass that onto your kids, why not join a beach clean-up? Cape Town Beach Cleanup and Clean C each have clean-ups happening on specific Saturdays during the month.
Try Your Hand At Surfing
If you are brave enough and you have older kids, why not go for a surfing lesson? Blouberg is a favourite spot amongst surfers, kite surfers, and wind surfers due to its windy conditions. There are many surfing schools, including kitesurfing and windsurfing. We even have our very own kitesurfing shop at the hotel, run by world-famous kite surfer Mike Mac Donald! So, if you want advice from the best, simply head to the old cellar where all your needs will be met.
Wave Hello To The Penguins At SANCCOB
The South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds is a non-profit that has been running since 1968, focused on the conservation, rehabilitation, and protection of South African seabirds. SANCCOB is particularly known for rehabilitating African Penguins who are found covered in oil from spillage caused by ships. The centre is based at the Rietvlei Wetland Reserve in Table View and is the perfect excursion that combines fun and education. The centre offers daily tours, every hour on the hour, between 09:00 and 15:00, and booking beforehand is highly recommended. The tours are R60 for adults (RSA citizens), R75 for international adult visitors, and R40 for senior citizens. Kids 12 and under are R50 and kids under 3 go in for free!
Enjoy A Picnic At The West Coast National Park
If you are willing to drive a bit, the West Coast National Park is a fantastic day trip for the entire family. This gem of a park has many great walking and cycling trails, excellent animals to keep an eye out for, a beautiful flower season, and water activities on the Langebaan Lagoon. You can even watch whales during August and September! Pack a picnic basket and blanket and come enjoy this stretch of South Africa’s magnificent West Coast. Admission for the day is R70 for adults and R35 for children outside flower season, and R104 for adults and R52 for children during flower season (August and September).
